This charming city is like a time capsule, boasting a remarkable collection of meticulously preserved Victorian storefronts and homes that transport you to a bygone era. It’s a place where history comes alive, and where you’ll find an abundance of delightful activities to make your visit truly unforgettable.

Nestled in Northern California’s Humboldt County, Ferndale may be a bit off the beaten path, but trust me, it’s worth every moment of the journey. With its small-town charm, a mere population of 1,372, and a distinct absence of stoplights, this tenacious community has weathered earthquakes, floods, fires, and even depopulation, emerging stronger and more resilient than ever. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful and rejuvenating escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. So, let me share with you some of my absolute favorite things to do in this beautiful and captivating place called Ferndale, California. Get ready to be enchanted!

Things To Do In Ferndale California With Family

When it comes to creating precious family memories, few things beat embarking on an exciting adventure together. If you’re seeking a charming destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historic charm, and family-friendly activities, look no further than Ferndale, California. Below are the family-friendly things to do in Ferndale, Ca.

Visit Victorian Masterpieces

Ferndale resembles a museum of Victorian architecture in certain ways. Ferndale features one of California’s biggest collections of Victorian homes, all of which are well-kept. The majority of the structures, known as Butterfat Palaces locally, were constructed in the Victorian era using money earned from creameries and dairies. I advise starting with the tour of main street, a short five-block stroll, which is magnificent and calmful. I believe the ideal method is to proceed down one side of Main and proceed back to the beginning. Spend some time admiring the houses that appeal to you. If someone approaches the entrance to say hi and started telling about you the wide history of cherished Victorian house, don’t be shocked.

Find A Quilt

Given the abundance of historical activities in Ferndale, California, quilting has a long history there as it does in all pioneer villages. Some of the old barns in the basin have quilt blocks painted on them by the neighborhood quilt guild. You can travel the beautiful Barn Quilt Trail on foot or by bicycle. You travel down the country road looking for barns with quilt blocks on display. You’ll come across calves, sheep, cows,  and perhaps lamas as you meander. The barn’s owner chose the quilt block on display. The land and Ferndale’s founders are honored on the blocks. The vibrant designs on the barns are painted by the Redwood Empire Guild of the Quilter.

Find Ferndale Museum

The Ferndale Museum is one example of how small-town museums can be treasure troves. This farming region’s past is proudly displayed. Both abundant and high-quality timber gave rise to industries. Communities expanded and thrived. Ferndale is where a lot of inventions first emerged. Dairy, transportation, and logging all benefited. Innovations that altered how farmers worked are displayed in exhibits of milking equipment. Objects from the lumber business are mixed in, including a piece of a massive redwood. Its rings are covered in labels that list important historical occurrences.

Russ Park

The area is widely known as “Ferndale’s Nature Preserve.” The 105-acre park known as Russ Park is home to local Northern Californian vegetation and fauna. If you’re looking for the greatest things to do in Ferndale, California, the park has a ton of hiking and biking paths that are suitable for people of all skill levels. A map showing the trail’s length and rise in elevation may be found at the trailhead. Except for the sound of birdsong resonating through the forest, Russ Park is peaceful. Insects live in these woodlands in the summer; so be ready for them. This area might be perfect for taking a forest bath.

Redwood Sky Walk

Want to take a stroll more than 90ft above the ground of the forest among massive redwoods? Move in the direction of the stunning Redwood Sky Walkas the eye soothing place opened in the month of June 2021. Don’t miss this exhilarating track through the forest. From one tree to the next, sturdy wood bridges with high railings are present. Every route leads to the central redwood. Wheelchair users can access the Sky Walk, but strollers are not permitted. There’s a thrilling rope bridge for the daring. It sways and swings a little, but I crossed it and watched some little children cross the bridge very bravely, so you should try it must. A slightly sloped ramp that begins at the woodland floor leads to the Sky Walk.

Go To Fernbridge Bridge

Although I adore bridges, Fernbridge Bridge gives me a little anxiety. It’s a little too narrow for modern cars, having been built in 1911. However, Fernbridge is a stunning city. The entrance to Ferndale is famously known as the queen of bridges. Take the gravel lane stop to the parking lot on the bridge’s southeast side. From there, you are able to walk beneath the world’s longest operational concrete-poured bridge. Honestly speaking, it is without a doubt a photographer’s paradise.
